Term One:

CONFORMITY AND REBELLION

We begin the year examining how individuals act in society. What pressures are there to be like everyone else?  What happens when you are different? How can an individual react when they disagree with the direction of a community? What is conformity and is rebellion the only option to make changes?

Through the study of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and the film, ‘Arrival’ directed by Denis Villeneuve, we consider how individuals conform and rebel.

Term Two

We continue to evaluate a variety of texts including film as text. Students learn how to develop their evaluation and analysis skills and respond to the film ‘Arrival’ , examining themes such as communication, trust and cooperation.

There will be a semester 1 exam in 2025.

PERSPECTIVE

You will participate in the Dr Norman Fary Public Speaking Competition. These will focus on an area of student interest and will be presented in a class TED Talk Conference.

Term Three:

AGENCY

In Term 3 we continue to consider diversity, equity and respect, with a focus on personal agency, through Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, a memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Drawing on your study of how art reflects life you will be completing an essay investigating a complex idea to do with conformity and rebellion, using Persepolis and real world examples as your source of evidence.

Term Four:

PERSPECTIVE

We study poetry, stories and art with the theme ‘Our Faces, Our Places’. It has been designed to explore a variety of Australian and Asian texts with a particular focus on perspective and place.
