DAV Schools Wrap-Up Round 1

Well done everyone on making it through the first round of debating for 2022! Despite some rushed preparation, you guys were able to achieve some impressive results and made a strong start to the 2022 season.

This round we won 10 out of 12 debates.

  • Congratulations to our B Grade team (Lucy Cahill, Ana Fernandes and Jack Davis) who, in a fantastic start to the season, recorded the largest winning margin by a St Leonard’s team with a win of 7 points over Firbank Grammar.

The full results for round 1 (with speakers, results and best speakers) were as follows:

A GRADE RESULTS:

  • A Grade 1 won after Firbank Grammar School 1 forfeited

 B GRADE RESULTS:

  • B Grade 1 (Lucy Cahill, Ana Fernandes, Jack Davis) defeated Firbank Grammar School 1 by 7 points. Lucy Cahill was awarded best speaker
  • B Grade 2 won after Brighton Grammar School 2 forfeited
  • B Grade 3 (Sophie McMillan, Lola Scasserra, Violette O’Farrell) defeated Kilbreda College 2 by 2 points. Sophie McMillan was awarded best speaker.

 C GRADE RESULTS:

  • C Grade 1 (Matthew Hem, Yi Wei Wang, Owen Moxham) lost to Beaumaris Secondary College 2 by 1 point,
  • C Grade 2 (Julie Zhang, Ryan Zheng, Alexandra Lord) defeated McKinnon Secondary College 3 by 4 points. Ryan Zheng was awarded best speaker.
  • C Grade 3 (Bella Zhu, Madeline Marcus, Killian Greenan) defeated McKinnon Secondary College 1 by 4 points. Madeline Marcus and Killian Greenan were awarded best speaker.
  • C Grade 4 (Tahlia Page, Emily Conheady, Noa Staunton) defeated Albert Park College 1 by 1 point.

 D GRADE RESULTS:

  • D Grade 1 (Ellia Rogers-Whyte, Jamie McBeth, Charlotte Henry) defeated Beaumaris Secondary College 1 by 2 points. Charlotte Henry was awarded best speaker.
  • D Grade 2 won after Albert Park College 1 forfeited
  • D Grade 3 (Tali Shevach, Matilda Tuppen, Lucinda Maxwell) lost to McKinnon Secondary College 4 by 1 point.
  • D Grade 4 (Thomas Gedge, Xavier McBeth, Isabelle Aldritt) defeated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1 by 5 points. Thomas Gedge and Xavier McBeth were awarded best speaker.

Round 2 of the Schools Competition is on 16th March.

The Topics for Round 2 are:

  • A Grade: That we prefer a hung parliament to a majority government
  • B Grade: That only citizens and permanent residents should be able to own property in Australia
  • C Grade: That parliamentarians should be allowed to hold citizenship other than Australian citizenship
  • D Grade: That we should abolish the Australian citizenship test
