Speakfest Guidelines

Below you can find the times for each of the Speakfest competition (i.e. the competition that the development team will be participating in).

Coordinate Debating

• Proposer: 4 minutes
• Opposer: 4 minutes
• Seconder to the Proposition: 6 minutes
• Seconder to the Opposition: 6 minutes
• Opposer (summing up): 2 minutes
• Proposer (summing up): 2 minutes

The Speakfest debates will be on prepared topics, but you will  not know which side of the debate you will have nor which speaker role you will be fulfilling. The topics for the 2014 Speakfest are:

• Round 1: This House believes that parents of students who bully should be held legally responsible for bullying in schools.
• Round 2: This House believes that high stakes state testing should be abolished.

Impromptu Speaking

• 2 minutes preparation
• 3 to 5 minutes speaking, with a 15 second grace period

Interpretive Reading

• The reading should be be between 5 and 8 minutes long
• An introduction of up to 1 minute is included in the time permitted

After Dinner Speaking

• Speeches should go for 5 minutes
• A grace period of 1 minute is allowed

Persuasive Speaking

• Speeches should go for 8 minutes
• A grade period of 3 minutes is allowed
