What should you have done? What could you be doing?

Work requirements in Encountering Conflict so far….these should all be complete by now (or getting caught up on this week)

Do not get behind….complex ideas take time to develop!

All resources looked at so far have been posted here: https://learn.stleonards.vic.edu.au/vceeng/category/ms-esler/

  1. Read/listened to Life of Galileo – the film version may be helpful: https://learn.stleonards.vic.edu.au/vceeng/2015/05/12/links-to-film-of-log/
  2. Be familiar with PowerPoint slides introducing you to Encountering Conflict and theories of Hobbes, Foucault and the Christian View: https://learn.stleonards.vic.edu.au/vceeng/files/2015/05/Encountering-Conflict-PPT-20151.pdf
  3. Completed allocated Scene questions – questions are on above ppt.  Class responses to questions are here: https://learn.stleonards.vic.edu.au/vceeng/2015/05/12/life-of-galileo-text-work/
  4. Watched ‘Age of Reason’ video – connect/extend/challenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8iohPnq9go

What should you be doing to engage more deeply with the material?

  1. Revisit material to ensure you understand.  Reread ppt slides, rewatch videos, listen/read LOG again
  2. Using the Scene by Scene guide given to you today to further your understanding of the play and its ideas about conflict: https://learn.stleonards.vic.edu.au/vceeng/files/2015/05/LIFE-OF-GALILEO-overview.pdf
  3. Ask questions – of yourself, of me, of each other – if there’s sections that you ‘don’t get’ or you’re not sure of – ask!
  4. Research/think further – each of the resources we have looked at has the scope to be explored further.  Look into HUAC in greater detail, read more about Brecht’s encounter with conflict, read the introduction to Life of Galileo, research one of the scientific controversies Mr Barlow mentioned that interests you…

Language Analysis – Holiday Homework

Hi all,

Your holiday homework is to write two language analysis essays – one on the dangerous dogs issue and one on the Year 9 boot camp issue.  Read this post carefully for the information you need.   In order to receive feedback on your essays at the start of term, they will need to be emailed to me no later than Friday evening the 10th of April.  Earlier would be appreciated!

Make use of the resources below to assist you.

Tasks (Print them so you can circle, annotate, highlight etc):

Task 1: Dog Breeds

Task 2: Boot Camp

Resources:

* Writing a Language Analysis Essay -Keep this document by you when planning and writing.  It takes you through the process, step by step.

* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdDpGgLdioM

This screencast from Ms Haake, guides you through the ‘Boot Camp’ articles.   In your planning, please remember to always circle words that ‘jump out at you’ as well as making annotations.  It makes it much easier to ‘zoom in’ on individual language choices in your analysis.

* Patterns in persuasive writing – This PPT from our last class, is useful to refer to when trying to understand the overall persuasive pattern of a particular article.

*There is other material here that you may find helpful – https://learn.stleonards.vic.edu.au/vceeng/using-language-to-persuade/planning-a-language-analysis-essay/

Theme Presentations and ‘body paragraph’ test

The presentations are included below.

Ageism

Ambition

Group 5 – Identity

Gender Roles

Hollywood vs. Theatre

Reality vs illusion

You should be using these notes as part of your revision as you continue to commit quotes to memory and have a variety of mis-en-scene symbolic elements you can use throughout your essay.

Tomorrow – You will choose between two topic sentences and write a body paragraph.  No notes! You must have quotes memorised. You will need to ensure you consider M and draw on symbolism and mis-en-scene. The general theme will be ambition.

Essay #2 – Ambition

A copy of my email re. Essay 2 – Ambition (due Tues 3/3)

Essay Topic: All About Eve is about fame, ambition and what people are willing to give up in order to achieve it. Discuss

A reminder that you can use the introduction I have done:

  • In ‘All About Eve’, Joseph Mankiewicz exposes the cutthroat reality of the theatrical world lurking behind the sophisticated façade. The viewer is presented with characters whose insatiable desire for celebrity  and ‘waves of love’ comes at a great cost, while others choose to move out of the spotlight in order to achieve happiness.  The drive to succeed amongst ‘theatre folk’ in the ‘stone jungle’ can dominate so strongly that they become ruthless and amoral.  However Mankiewicz suggests that women pay a greater price for their ambition then men, due to the gender bias prevalent in 1950s America. It is important to note that not all characters in All About Eve are driven by fame and marriage is presented as an alternative means of fulfilment.  Ultimately, Mankiewicz suggests that the cost of pursuing stardom is not isolated to individual characters in the film, but fundamental to the theatre industry more broadly.

The topic sentences for each paragraph are:

  • The drive to succeed amongst ‘theatre folk’ in the ‘stone jungle’ can dominate so strongly that they become ruthless and amoral.   BP 1
  • M suggests that women pay a greater price for their ambition then men, due to the gender bias prevalent in 1950s America. BP 2
  • Not all characters are driven by fame and ambition and Mankiewicz presents marriage as an alternative means of fulfilment.  BP 3
  • Ultimately, M suggests that the cost of pursuing stardom is not isolated to individual characters in the film, but fundamental to the theatre industry more broadly.  BP 4 The PPT is available here: https://learn.stleonards.vic.edu.au/vceeng/2015/02/27/ambition-essay/

I have attached material for BP 1 and 4 from class yesterday that you can use for ideas for quotes– as that is what I have received.

This essay topic is enabling you to work through the key ideas from the film will be central to draw on in AAE essays – ambition, gender bias, critique of the theatre industry etc. – so it is important to work through this essay carefully as the evidence you use will be relevant for future essays.

    See you Monday.
