START PACKING…..
Here is our t-shirt.
Thanks for wearing it to the Walkathon. Please wash it and keep it until November. You will need to wear it on the plane to China.
Community service is an important part of the China ‘Big Experience’. Students will undertake a service project in a Miao Village near Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Students will visit with families and attend school with the village students to share in cultural exchange classes. This visit will provide for an improvement in the facilities and teaching materials and allow our students to gain first-hand knowledge of the experience less privileged students have to further their education. St Leonard’s student will roll up their sleeves and contribute time and resources to the agricultural and farming life of the village as they immerse themselves in this aspect of service learning.
Funds will be raised through students participating in the ‘Big Experience Fundraising Walk’. Students will honoured their Big Experience communities this way through showing strong determination and a high degree of sacrifice that takes them out of their comfort zone to achieve this challenge and be immensely proud of their contribution.
A level of fitness will be necessary to complete the course and fulfil their commitment pledged to the community of this Big Experience. Some training tips, prepared by Mark Slykhuis (Head of Community Sport), are available in the HSC and there are further opportunities that exist with the College such as gym programs, weekend training events and running clubs to name a few.
We are asking students to obtain sponsors for this event, and seek your support in this also. Please note that we are hoping students will gain sponsorship from their extended family, friends or from members of the community. Students have been provided with a form on which to record sponsorships per kilometer and/ or donations. To make this process easier, we have created online donations, possible through OneStopSecure-St Leonard’s. Electronic pledges made on behalf of students can be done via the following link https://stleonards.onestopsecure.com/OneStopWeb/StudentFees/menu by navigating to the Big Experience page and proceeding from there. These will be recorded and students will be advised as to how to get these details.
A significant amount of money needs to be raised in order to carry out the important community service projects in China, and the Walkathon is the major fundraising venture.
Please contact the Middle School or Community Sport Offices if you have any further queries.
