* In preparation for your first Urban excursion please complete the Home Station and Mobile Telephone Number Survey at HERE.

The Urban Exploration Domain requires students to reflect upon and investigate influences on the evolution of a city, considering how it looks, how it develops and how our different cultures interact. Students negotiate transport; look into our multi-cultural nature as a city and study economic drivers to focus on the urban development of the city of Melbourne and its suburbs.

Days out for students may include the following experiences (not necessarily in order!).

Have you ever sat to simply watch the hustle and bustle that is a city? We will spend some time sitting and observing just how busy Melbourne CBD is. Cycle the city paths to follow in the footsteps of Charles Grimes, exploring the sights of Melbourne from the Yarra River, our major river that is currently used for transport and leisure. The Yarra River was once called Birrarung (the current name was mistranslated from another Wurundjeri term in Boonwurrung language: Yarro-yarro, meaning “ever-flowing”) and was used by the Wurundjeri people as a major food source and meeting place. This will be followed by a BYO picnic lunch and scavenger hunt in the glorious Botanic Gardens. Finally, wander to the Shrine for a guided tour. Here we will be focussing on the First World War, the wartime services and experiences of Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians and how they have shaped our future.

Operate in teams of five or six in an attempt to garner as many points as possible in a team versus team challenge. Points are awarded for various set tasks (including a dining challenge in China Town); all of the challenges take place in the CBD and immediate surrounds. Team costumes are a must with potential bonus points on offer for those teams who go above and beyond with their attire for the day! Costumes and enthusiasm are a must on this day!!
