The Australian Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships is a interschool competition that is held annually. Schools from around Australia send teams of students to compete across four events:

  • Debating
  • Impromptu Speaking
  • Interpretive Reading
  • Prepared Speaking (Persuasive or After-Dinner)

The Championship is aligned with the ideals of excellence, identity, and the art of expression: the ability to communicate and gain recognition and respect for ones ideas and opinions. It targets tomorrow’s leaders: students in a global market who must learn to interact and collaborate with peers from diverse schools and cultural backgrounds.

The competition takes place over three days, with participants performing each event twice before finals are held on the last day of competition. Winners in each event are announced, and an overall ranking of the best speakers across all events is presented at the end. These overall rankings are used to determine who will form the Australian team at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships for the following year.
