There are 5 areas to the Gold Award

  • Service
  • Skill
  • Physical Recreation
  • Adventurous Journey
  • Residential Project

The Service, Skill and Physical Recreation components require students to undertake activities for a commitment of 12 months, either as;

  • 1 hour of activity every seven days or;
  • 2 hours of activity every fourteen days or;
  • 4 hours of activity every 28 days
  • Totalling 52 hours

If students are direct entries into the Gold Award – that is, they have not completed the Silver award – they will need to select 1 component (service, skill or physical recreation) to complete an additional 6 months. Totalling 78 hours (18 months) in one component

Adventurous Journey:

  • 4 days/ 3 nights practice journey.
  • 4 days/ 3 nights qualifying journey.

The Outdoor Education department run an 8 day hike every second year, which fulfils these journey requirements.

The Gold Award level is distinguished not only by the greater time requirement, but also a fifth area of involvement called the Residential Project. This is a 5 day/ 3night (sports camp, language trip etc.) project-based trip. Options need to be discussed with the Award Leader well in advance to ensure all requirements for the Project are met.
