Beth Dixon grew up singing more often than they spoke and got their first taste of musical theatre playing the Narrator in their primary school production of ‘Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ at the age of 10. Beth soon after got the opportunity to sing for the primary school guitar group and choral group. By high school, Beth had been playing flute for 4 years, taking singing lessons regularly, and participated in dancing and acting classes. Putting their hand up for any and every musical opportunity that presented itself. Beth played the lead in their grade 10 production of ‘Footloose! The Musical’ and performed in productions such as ‘Urinetown, The Musical’, ‘The Witches of Eastwick’, ‘In the Heights’, and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ by the end of year 12.
Moving to Melbourne from Tasmania in 2016, Beth has never looked back. After working in a bakery as an apprentice for 3 years, Beth couldn’t help but feel they missed their musical life and decided to study their Bachelor of Contemporary Music Performance at the Australian Institute of Music, graduating in 2021. During this time, Beth taught themself guitar and piano, and began writing their own music. Beth then took to improving their Vocal Pedagogy skills at The University of Melbourne, completing their Master of Music (Performance Teaching) by 2023. Beth enjoys performing live music in a duo on the weekends.
Beth has been teaching instrumental music in primary schools for 3 years, teaching voice, guitar, and piano (to as many as 80 students a week) and running the kids rock band. Beth’s favourite feeling is seeing their students smile after a successful performance or achieving a goal set in class.
With a long-standing background in contemporary voice and musical theatre, Beth takes joy in continuously improving their teaching skills and musicianship to provide accessible, enjoyable, and inspiring musical education to students of all ages and skill-levels. Beth prioritises vocal health, individual enjoyment, and tailoring lessons to each students’ needs and learning styles.
Beth is overjoyed at the opportunity to work at St Leonards and is excited to work with the wonderful staff and student cohort here.
