About January Music Camp

Sunday 17 January to Monday 25 January

Rutherford Park Country Homestead

The annual Music Camp will again be held in January for all students in orchestras, choirs, bands and jazz bands at St Leonard’s College. We are delighted that this year we will be joined at camp by internationally recognised educational leaders in the areas of Orchestra, Choir, Concert Band and Big Band. These guest clinicians will work with every ensemble at camp as well as presenting a series of inspirational evening workshops and masterclasses. This camp is suitable for students who will be in years 7 to 12 in 2016. Younger students may be appropriate and should contact the Directors of Music to discuss this.

All meals (including those with special dietary requirements), accommodation and transport will be provided. While the camp covers nine days, each section (Orchestra, Choir, Bands/Guitar Ensembles & Jazz Program) will be at camp for 3 days only. Students may enrol in multiple sections of the camp.

ORCHESTRA CAMP           Sunday 17 Jan – Tuesday 19 Jan

CHOIR CAMP          Tuesday 19 Jan – Thursday 21 Jan

Choral guest clinician Naomi Crellin – The Idea of North

Many of our staff and students have met Naomi at the Mt Gambier National Championships where she both adjudicates and performs with acapella vocal group, the Idea of North. After joining The Idea of North in early 2002, Naomi quickly became a significant contributor to the group’s repertoire through her writing and arranging and has also utilised her extensive choral training and experience in taking a major responsibility for managing the group’s rehearsals and educational activities.

BAND CAMP (also including Guitar Ensembles) Thursday 21 Jan – Saturday 23 Jan

Bands guest clinician Dr John Lynch – Professor of conducting and bands at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Staff and students alike are thrilled that Dr Lynch has agreed to once again attend the January Music Camp. His impact upon the bands program at the 2015 camp was profound. Dr Lynch’s biography is quite extraordinary. Prior to joining the University of Sydney in June 2014, Dr. John Lynch was previously the Director of Bands and Professor of Music at The University of Georgia where he guided all aspects of the band and graduate and wind conducting programs. He has ten years of high school teaching experience in his native New York State where he was the national recipient of the Stanbury Award for outstanding teaching and conducting.

JAZZ CAMP Saturday 23 Jan – Monday 25 Jan

Jazz Program guest clinician   Rob Chenoweth – Director of the Jazz Program at Marryatville High School (South Australia)

Marryatville High School is a special interest music school in South Australia who are internationally recognised for their excellence in music education. In particular, their Jazz Program has been the most successful of any Australian school over the past 2 decades. They have won in all division at the Mt Gambier National Championships. More significantly they have been the division 1 National Champions 11 times since 1998. Rob Chenoweth has been leading the program throughout that time. We are thrilled that he has agreed to work with all our bands and jazz staff.

Ensembles involved in the 2016 Music Camp will include SLSO, Philharmonic, Chamber Strings, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Senior Musical Orchestra, Senior Choir, Soprano/Alto Choir, Tenor/Bass Choir, Auditioned Choir, Messiah Choir & Orchestra, Community Choir, Melodic Minors, Jazz Band, Stage Band, Swing Band, Big Band and Electric & Acoustic Guitar Ensembles.
