Literature to Life is an exciting elective which will only be offered in semester 2, 2018. In order to prepare for this elective, please consider the ideas below and keep reading. Come prepared to share your favourite book with the class. 

 

At it’s heart, Literature to Life is about one thing: the love of writing. It is about reading diverse examples of writing, crafting new pieces of writing, sharing our writing, and exploring the beauty and power that lies behind the written word.

 

You will be exposed and challenged by a diverse range of authors as you take an expansive journey through the different genres that have come to characterise modern fiction. We will begin with reading John Steinbeck’s The Pearl and consider how such a short novella can contain such depth. We will draw widely from other writers as well. From Roald Dahl to Chris Van Allsburg, Lemony Snicket to Shakespeare, you will be able to explore new authors, new genres, and expand you knowledge of the riches to be found in literature.  All this, and more, is waiting for you: just grab a book from the shelf to get started…

In the second half of the course, the focus shifts towards your own creations, as you are given the opportunity to craft a piece of writing of your own AND TO CREATE A WRITING FOLIO. Is there a story inside of you just waiting to be freed? Or do you want to further refine and hone your own creative writing skills? You will be able to create your own extended story, sharing your ideas with others and workshopping your writing in groups in order to produce your own masterpieces!
