BYOD
St Leonard’s College has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model of student technology provision which transitions students from the easy to use and highly versatile iPad in the early primary years, through to a productive and ‘work-ready’ laptop in the middle and senior years.

Please note that specific information relating to device requirements and App Lists may change from year to year. Families are asked to re-visit this site in October before purchasing devices or Apps for the following school year.
Students in years Prep to 4
Every day students in years Prep to 4 are required to only bring their own iPad or iPad Air (128GB or greater) in a cover.
- A brand-new iPad is expected to last students through the five Junior School years. Due to the life cycle of technology students are expected to bring an iPad to school that is no more than five years old.
- iPads should be running the latest version of iPadOS (the iPad operating system software), v18 or higher in 2025. If your iPad cannot run the latest version, you will need to purchase a new iPad.
- While the iPad is a touch screen device, students are able to connect a pencil, keyboard and mouse to their iPad for typing and navigation if this is desired.
- Students may bring an iPad Pro; however, this level of power is not needed in the early years of schooling and thus is not recommended.
- Students may not bring an iPad mini; the screen size is too small for classroom use.
Students are also required to install all the apps listed on the St Leonard’s College Prep-2 or Years 3-4 app lists appropriate to their year level.
Students in years 5 to 12
Students in years 5 and up begin to diverge in their computing requirements. As students move into these years they are presented with an increasing array of subject selections and have diverse learning requirements. They need to be challenged and they take on increasingly complex learning tasks. In the most senior years, they also need to start preparing for the tertiary or workplace environment. It is important that students become proficient in a desktop class operating system on a device that is ‘work-ready’. As such, students in years 5 to 12 are required to bring one of the following options:
- Apple Mac laptop
- Windows laptop
It is expected that student laptops will last for four years, and it is recommended that one laptop is purchased for years 5 to 8, with another purchased for years 9 to 12. To ensure this, laptops must be carried in a protective laptop sleeve.
Student devices must have the below minimum specifications:
- Devices must have Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) networking capability or better.
- At least 256GB of onboard storage.
- At least 8GB of memory.
- A minimum screen size of 12 inches.
- Devices must have a permanently attached keyboard – no detachable keyboards or tablet style devices.
- Devices must be running Mac OS 14 (Sonoma) or later OR Windows 11 or later.
Students are also required to install all the apps listed on the Years 5-12 app list.
