Term 1: Indigenous Voices: Poetry and Lyrics

In this unit, students will explore poetry and song lyrics by First Nations Australians that consider the concept of home and Country.

Through the exploration of this poems, students will learn more about the history of poetry, poetic form and features, as well as developing their analytical skills.

At the culmination of this unit, students will be required to write a close analysis of one or more of the poems studied. This task is a small insight into the type of work students could expect to complete if they selected a Literature elective or subject in later years of schooling.

Alongside this, students will consider the issues and historical events referenced, and alluded to, in the poems, and through this, their knowledge of First Nations Australians’ history and culture.
